The Healthy Homes Initiative is an integrated, comprehensive program that addresses the multiple of safety and health hazards that are found in the home environment. These home-based safety and health hazards include lead poisoning, severe asthma and allergy responses, carbon monoxide poisoning, radon, chemical sensitivities resulting from building product off-gassing, toxic poisoning from outdoor ground or air pollution, and electrical, mechanical, and structural hazards due to improper maintenance.
EPA, HUD, and NDHC's own research have found that low-to-moderate income occupants, especially children, suffer from these home health and safety hazards disproportionately to the population as a whole. NDHC's vision of a comprehensive Healthy Homes Initiative includes a combination of homeowner and tenant education and empowerment, property owner education, a community resource center, Healthy Homes renovation services, and Healthy Homes new construction services.
Lead-Safe Denver is a program of the Healthy Homes Initiative. Under this program, NDHC provides renovation services to families whose children have lead poisoning or whose children are at high risk for lead poisoning. We also provide general education and outreach to families to prevent lead poisoning and free blood lead testing. The Lead-Safe Denver link provides more information about lead poisoning and lead hazards. | |
